This is a success story about promoting good nutrition and hygiene for everyone in the community. We have targeted target groups in remote areas, especially pregnant women and children under 5 years of age, to provide them with access to healthcare, clean water, nutritious food, toilets, etc. The following story is part of the success stories we have implemented in the past, which shows the changes in the target groups. We invite you to enjoy reading.
An elderly woman in Aiyan is happy to receive the COVID-19 vaccine
Expanding COVID-19 vaccination is essential for the Lao people, especially those with disabilities, both children and adults living in rural areas. A 98-year-old woman, Aiyan, lives in Apo Village, Nong District, Savannakhet Province. Aiyan had never been vaccinated against COVID-19 before. When the mobile team went to disseminate information and vaccinate people in the target village, they met Aiyan and talked to her about the importance of getting vaccinated. Aiyan told the team: At first, she didn’t want to get vaccinated. She was afraid that the vaccination would affect her physical health because she was old and not as healthy as the general public. Later, the mobile team went to villages and people’s homes to provide health education on the importance of vaccination as a preventive measure against COVID-19, to make them aware of the harmful effects of the disease. In addition, the project was also integrated into the routine vaccination program for mothers and children in rural areas so that they could access better primary health care. Finally, Mrs. Ai Yen decided to receive the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and wanted to continue with the second and third doses without fear.
She told the team: Thank you to the team and the project for coming to vaccinate her at home, making it convenient, not having to travel far, and still keeping her safe from COVID-19. It is good that there is a mobile medical team that comes to provide vaccination services to households. Everyone has access and everyone is safe.
People with chronic illnesses can still get vaccinated against Covid-19
“Good health is a beautiful thing.” This saying is true as it is said. I believe that everyone wants to be healthy and not suffer from diseases. But it is impossible to avoid it. The cycle of this world is birth-aging-sickness-death. Everyone has to face it one day and everyone has a different way of coping. Ms. Bounpheng, who lives in Ban Houay Khaihong, is also a chronic patient (with hypertension). At first, when the team went to provide information, spread health education, and prepare vaccinations for the people in the village, the team talked to her and she told the team that she was afraid that if she got the vaccine, it would have side effects on her physical health because she had heard that some people did not respond to the vaccine and their bodies made their health worse. However, when the medical team provided mobile services to reach the community and households and provided in-depth health education about the side effects, behaviors to be done, and benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine, she decided to receive the first injection without any further fear.
He also told the team: He will continue to get all 4 doses of the vaccine because he has learned about the harmful effects of COVID-19. And most importantly, it is now convenient to access each dose of the vaccine because there is a mobile medical team that has come to provide vaccination services to households. Thank you for the team and the project that gives importance, attention, and help to us, people living in such remote areas who have difficulty traveling to get vaccinated.
Behavioral transformation of women in Daktaocyai village
According to our traditions that have been respected and practiced since ancient times, women must be polite, modest, cultured, housewives, and take good care of the house and family, which makes most women accustomed and understand that they must be the submissive party and do not have the right to express their needs or have equal rights to men. However, as we know, society has changed and given women more rights by promoting gender equality in society. The following story is the real life of a target group member who is just an ordinary woman, but before she did not play a role and did not dare to express herself in the family. Most of the family depended on her husband until the programmed came to make a change. Let’s follow and read together: Ms. Wanmani Lamaxay, 29 years old, lives in Daktaocyai Village, DakChueng District, Sekong Province. There are a total of six people in the family: Ms. Vanmani, her husband, grandparents and two children. The main workers are only two people, a husband and wife, they have a farming career, gardening, because the children are still young and the grandparents are very old (they are disabled people). Ms. Wanmani said: Before, the women in my village followed the customs that have been practiced since the generations of the ancestors. Women who are wives have to be under the control of their husbands, they almost do not have the opportunity to go out to participate in various social activities, some do not have the opportunity to go at all, they only work at home, work in the fields, earn food and take care of their children or have a heavier burden than their husbands. Ms. Wanmani said: Before, the women in my village followed the customs that have been practiced since the generations of the ancestors. As the president of the village women’s union, I have disseminated lessons learned from the government sector and projects for women in the village to foster unity and mutual help, and to improve the family economy. I feel proud and happy to be the village representative in providing information, knowledge and news to the villagers, especially the women.
People with disabilities can also get vaccinated against COVID-19
We all know that in the past, people with disabilities had more difficulties and problems in their lives than the general public, whether it was getting around, participating in society, accessing services and education. Compared to today, things are very different. Nowadays, people with disabilities have the same rights and are equal to the general public. Although people with disabilities have difficulties in their lives, they can now access various aspects more easily. For example, Mr. Khamphan, 44 years old, living in Ban Phouphanang, Thapangthong District, Savannakhet Province, is a person with a disability (right leg disability). When the team went to talk to him to get him vaccinated against Covid-19, he told the team that he was worried and afraid of side effects on his physical health because he is disabled. He usually has a harder life than others. If the vaccine has side effects, it will be even more difficult. But when the medical team explained and disseminated knowledge to him to understand more, he decided to get the first dose of the vaccine with the medical team. After monitoring his symptoms after receiving the vaccine and seeing that there were no side effects, he became more determined and decided to continue receiving the second dose and booster shot without fear.
He said: He is happy to have been vaccinated against the disease, but before, he was afraid and hesitant because he did not know about it. He heard from others that there were side effects and did not want to get vaccinated, but after getting vaccinated, he wanted to get vaccinated again because he was more afraid of the consequences of Covid-19. Before, due to the difficulty of traveling, he did not have access to knowledge and information. But now, it is very convenient. There is a mobile medical team service that comes to provide knowledge and injects vaccines to households. I would like to have this more often and to reach remote places that are not accessible to them.
