Our Hong Hien Ban Hao development project is one of the projects of the Association for Rural Mobilization and Improvement (ARMI), which has been implemented in 12 target schools in Adsaphone District, Savannakhet Province. The project was funded by the Switzerland Co-operation Organization, worth 120,720 US dollars, which has a project implementation period starting from June 25, 2020 - March 31, 2022, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports, represented by the Department of Education and Sports of Savannakhet Province.

Our village school development project (HBH) is a project that supported and contributed to the implementation of SDG 4 sustainable development goals, namely: ensuring equal and universal quality education and promoting life-long learning opportunities for all and contributing to the 9th Five-Year National Socio-economic Development Plan that is in line with the 2nd goal as well as the 2nd focus work plan to improve the quality of education at all levels either to create conditions for access to education in order to be ready to integrate with the region and internationally in supporting the industry 4.0.

According to the primary data collection before the implementation of the project, it has seen that the number of schools in the target villages of the project still have many things that are insufficient, such as: teaching-learning equipment, classrooms, teachers have not received training in new teaching skills, poor families do not have money to buy clothes and school supplies for their children, and they did not pay attention to see the importance to their children’s education. In addition, the implementation of the roles of the village education development board, including the promotion of the education of parents and students, had not been done well.

Therefore, in order to strengthen the capacity, support, promote and solve the above-mentioned problems, the development project of our village school (HBH) has been established. The direct beneficiaries are 622 students and the indirect beneficiaries are teachers, parents, village education development committees and village authorities around 1,000 people. The project has estimated results as:

  • The drop-out rate and class arrears of students at the target school does not exceed 5%.

  • At least 80% of the teachers at the target schools use the new teaching techniques that have been trained by the project (38 teachers).

Information about HBH

Our village school development project (HBH) has a total of 3 main activities, divided into 12 sub-activities:

Improvement of school facilities

Because the target school did not have many facilities that will attract the attention of students to come to school, such as: teaching-learning equipment, dilapidated building, broken desks, not enough bathrooms, some schools do not have a school yard for children to do activities, there is no reading room and the textbook is not enough. In order to contribute and solve the above problems, there are the following activities:

Improve and repair school buildings and desks

Improve the school grounds

Build reading room/corner for reading books promotion

This activity was implemented together with partners such as: teachers-students from technical-vocational college in Savannakhet province and parents of students who participated, such as painting the school sign with letters, building a barbed fence around the school, building a flag pole, bulletin information board, bookcase, building a new bathroom, building an additional wooden classroom, providing a new blackboard, demolishing the old school and moving to build a new school using old wood and new wood from the contribution of the village and drilling water bore system.

School area improvement activities, project teams have joined with parents, students, village education development board, Vocational Technical College, village technicians to implement school area improvement activities such as: making toys, the process of making traditional playground equipment (Outdoor playground/wooden swings, Douang dang) and using car tires as a playground.

Project teams have implemented this activity in 10 schools which supported plastic bookshelf, 449 story books, 2 stories each, totaling 1,298 books, providing paper stories, poem-story books that the district technician and project staff have produced simple copies of 7 stories on paper for all 38 teachers to use in storytelling activities for students before starting learning session.

Support learning materials for students

Support equipment and teaching-learning materials

Project supported learning materials for 1,490 students (787 girls) in 12 schools. Among them, there are 306 students from poor families. Support for student equipment includes: schoolbags, notebooks, pens and pencils.

Project have supported teaching-learning materials which included wooden ruler (long, right triangle, equal triangle and angle), abacus, Lao alphabet cards, English alphabet cards, vowel cards, number cards, animal name cards, occupation name cards, fruit name cards, Lao spelling tone posters, human anatomy wording poster (Lao/English), recipes multiplication formula poster, vowel poster in Lao language, map of Laos, world map and simulated earth unit. The direct beneficiaries are 38 teachers and 609 students.

Teaching and learning support

Because of some schools do not have enough teachers, the schools are far away from the teacher's home and the roads are difficult, there is no school dormitory for the teachers to stay which is one of the reasons why they do not come to teach the students regularly and make the students' learning not continuously. Therefore, in order to build capacity and strengthen capacity of teachers and students and to increase the quality of education, the project has to implement the following activities:

The Life Skills Development Association, which is one of the participants in this project, has organized training for technical staff from the Department of Education and Sports, technical staff from the District Education and Sports Office and project staff with a total of 7 topics: 1) Child-centered teaching-learning management, 2) Skills to lead activities and attract children's attention (games, music, drama, stories...), 3) Produce teaching materials by using local culture and objects, 4) Skills in teaching Lao language-mathematics, 5) Learning management – twin classroom teaching technics, 6) Storytelling techniques and work to promote reading in schools, 7) Children's rights and protection of children in schools and communities.

Primary teacher training

Supporting school excellence awards, teacher of the year and volunteer teachers

To promote and encourage schools, teachers, and volunteers who are attentive, determined and have outstanding performance in performing their duties. Therefore, we have selected these schools, teachers, and volunteers to award outstanding schools among the 12 target schools. Through evaluation each year 5 outstanding schools can be selected per year and 7 outstanding teachers can be selected per year. This activity is to encourage the community and the teachers who are effective to perform their duties well and continue to improve, especially effective and efficient teaching.

Celebrate International Children’s Day

International Children's Day celebrations are organized each year: the first year was organized in 5 target schools, the second year was organized in 12 target schools. The activities that have been implemented include: tree planting (fruit trees and shade trees), there was a demonstration of planting, protection for students. After planting, there were games such as: water in a bucket, village kickball game, squash game... with a happy atmosphere.

Behavioral change and life skills training

In this activity, teachers and students at 12 target schools did the activity of drawing and coloring, for which we provided various materials such as paper, black pencils and colored pencils. To strengthen students' imagination skills and be able to tell stories through pictures. We have provided knowledge about nutrition, gender roles, environment, agriculture and traditional sports and have practical guidance on cooking based on nutrition for teachers, school counselors, students as well as parents and guardians of students who come to participate. The atmosphere is full of fun, excitement, attention and activity.

Building the educational capacity of the community

According to the preliminary data collection before the implementation of the project, it was found that the implementation of the role of the village education development board as well as parents and students have not been done well. Thus, the community did not participate and took ownership in the development of education in full process of village education development, with the majority are still relying on programs and assistance from other parties. Therefore, project teams are looking for the better ways to build capacity and strengthen ability of all relevant project partners.

Project invited trainers from the Life Skills Development Association to train the relevant project partners on three main topics: 1) Living together in a multicultural way happily, 2) Participatory management of the community, 3) Development of local knowledge subjects Based on the initial assessment of the training, the participants had seen the process of encouraging and leading the community to create their own school development plan. The participants learned and gathered experience from the model of how to work in order to use knowledge to apply in the next activity.

Students’ parents meeting

The village meeting was held every year before the school year. In the first year, it was divided into 4 groups. Determined to gather neighboring villages and meet in the same place to jointly plan the development of community education. The participants were from the Village Education Development Board, Parents Association, teachers in 12 target primary schools. The details are as follows: Pha Nomphon complete elementary school with 3 participating villages: Phakkada, Phanomphon and Tat Khadeng; Khantakien Complete Primary School has 4 participating villages: Kham Phou, Hong Muang, Bang Bad Kok and Kantakien. Kangtiew Complete Primary School has 4 participating villages: Tabtao, Dongkhouang, Kangbone and Kangtiew and Kangthong Complete elementary school. The meeting was to discuss about educational issues, find out the solutions and plan for the development of their own village schools. Through the meeting, it was seen that the village development committee and the parents of the students have deeply understanding on the importance of the village school development.

Village Committee meeting

Parent-student meetings were organized in 12 target villages which has the participation of participants from the Department of Education and Sports, the focus group, all village education development groups, all parents and students’ associations and all school teachers. By exchanging and learning together, in order to be able to apply the good points and apply them in the right way to promote the work of education better.

The Expansion of the project

The clean water and nutrition infrastructure expansion project is one of the projects of the Association for Rural and Mobilization Improvement (ARMI) that has been implemented in seven target schools in three districts in Savannakhet Province, namely: Atsapone district comprises Kangtew Primary School, Kang Bon Primary School, Tab Tao Primary School and Dong Kham Kuan Primary School; and in Sepon District has a completed primary school in Meuang Chan; and Nong District includes Sadi and Hin Savang Primary Schools. The project received funding from the European Union (EU), worth 60,000 US dollars, which has a project implementation period starting from November 2020 to December 2021, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and Transport represented by the Department of Water Supply.

According to the initial baseline data collection before the project, it is seen that many target schools were not paying fully attention to the promotion of health activities in schools that had been causing some students’ illness due to the negligence in maintaining cleanliness and hygienic. The key objectives of this project were to increase the schools’ strengths in maintaining water sources, providing water systems and improving sanitation in schools, to build students awareness raising on the use of clean water and enhance hygiene skills in schools as well as to develop capacity for teachers to integrate life skills activities into teaching and learning methods and activities, especially to include the environmental science and the world environment around us subjects. The key project's expectations are: To ensure that everyone in the project's target groups have access to clean and safe water and sanitation services. The beneficiaries are that all students in seven target schools of the project.

The project has a total of 8 main activities

The project team organized a discussion meeting with the schools’ administrators and management teams including the teachers of the target schools to introduce the information of the project to the schools’ principals, teachers and students’ parents including the students to understand the results of the project and the project goals set, especially during the meeting, it was to agree that the teachers and students have to be jointly taken the responsibility for the protection of school facilities. In addition, project teams had given equipment to schools and students such as cleaning equipment with soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes etc.

Program introduction meeting

Promote good health in schools

(hand washing, brushing and taking deworming medicine)

In order to promote health for the target groups of each school to have good health, the project implementation teams organized training for teachers, village education development committee and some groups of students on washing hands with soap in 7 steps including providing songs and videos as teaching equipment for teachers to train students to listen and watch so that teachers could be able to learn and continue to teach students. After the completion of the training for the target groups, the project teams instructed the teachers to take lead the students in organizing hand washing activities with soap and brushing their teeth every day during the break time, after dirtied playing and before lunch. At the same time, the project implementation teams had organized an activity to raise awareness about taking anthelmintics in collaboration with the technical staff from the District Health Office to explain the importance and benefits of taking anthelmintics by showing pictures, posters and asking students to draw pictures about worms.

Encourage teachers to incorporate life skillsactivities into the existing curriculum

In order to strengthen teachers' awareness, understanding and life skills in integrating activities into the curriculum, the project teams organized various activities to promote the skills of teachers to become more proficient, for example: project team encouraged teachers to integrate activities into various subjects such as: playing games, telling stories, singing songs, drawing pictures, roles playing and doing other activities that are in line with the topics of the teaching subjects related to the 6 key subjects e.g. washing hands with soap, brushing teeth, taking anthelmintics, drinking clean and safe water, keeping the environment clean, maintaining hygiene and using toilets. The purposes of these activities are to reduce the absenteeism of students because they will learn in a fun and easy to remember way through enjoyable learning sessions and real touch on a regular and continuous basis. Moreover, to introduce the teachers, village education development board and students to recognize and understand about life skills activities (hygiene in school) that is very significant to the living condition and health of everyone especially students.

Train teachers to become school trainers to enhance schools become a 3-star school

In order to perform the various activities set by the project for the target schools to become a 3-star school, the project implementation teams invited trainers from the Provincial Department of Education and Sports who have high experience in building capacity together with the Ministry of Education and Sports to help in the facilitation of activities in Atsaphone and Nong Districts, Savannakhet Province. After the teachers’ participating in the training, each teacher had set up teaching lesson plans to teach each relevant subject for the next implementation of the actual teaching practices and organizing discussion sessions with the teachers to assess and reflect on the project implementation in the past, what issues that the teachers have found during the actual implementation, such as the advantages and difficulties and find out the solutions. This is the way to help teachers to examine themselves what they have been done well and also to strengthen and promote the teachers who have done well to guide other teachers in the schools in improving and steadily developing their teaching skills and implement action plans set accordingly.

Drawing pictures on A4 and A0 paper that promotes hygiene

In order to promote hygiene work, the project teams implemented many activities, especially painting activities, the project teams also supported the target group to draw meaningful pictures by drawing on paper, drawing pictures on the bathroom wall such as: Pictures about the transmission of diseases from the soil to the mouth, proper use of the toilet, methods and procedures for washing hands with soap, including pictures about various diseases. In this activity, the project teams encouraged teachers and students to participate together.
